Medical Advisory BoardProf Sir Roy CalneChairmanProfessor Sir Roy Calne is a pioneer of transplantation surgery. Known as Sir Roy since he was knighted in 1986, he has been a key figure in establishing lifesaving transplantation as part of routine clinical practice through his work on drugs to suppress organ rejection. Trained at Guys Hospital in London, he began his research in organ transplantation in 1959 at Royal College of Surgeons of England, where he described the first effective immunosuppression for kidney transplantation and also uses cyclosporin A in preventing rejection during transplantation. In 1965, he became Professor of Surgeon at the University of Cambridge and started the University's kidney transplant program with now more than 1,500 procedures. In 1968, he started the first European liver transplant program, and was credited with the first pancreas and intestinal transplants in the United Kingdom. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in the 1970s. Sir Roy is regarded as a specialist in paediatric liver transplantation. He is currently a Professor of Surgery Emeritus, Cambridge University and Yeah Ghim Professor of Surgery, National University of Singapore. |
Dr Gordon Ku, MB, BS, DCH, FAMS, FRCP, FACPDr. Ku is the founder and Chairman of Kidney Dialysis Foundation. He is a consultant nephrologist at Mt Elizabeth Medical Centre. He worked in Royal Free Hospital and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital in London. He also taught at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Singapore from 1973 ~ 1978. He served in the National Committee on Renal Care since 1999. |
Dr Stephen Chew Tec HuanDr Stephen Chew is a Consultant Nephrologists and Physician at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital and a Visiting Consultant at Changi General Hospital. He obtained his medical degree from National University of Singapore, and subsequently his Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) before moving on to completing his training in renal medicine in 1998. He also worked as a research associate at Duke University in 1997. As a Consultant Nephrologists at the Singapore General Hospital, he ran a home-based peritoneal dialysis program while providing patient care in general nephrology and renal transplantation. Dr Chew was also on the working committee of the Ministry of Health that developed clinical guidelines in glomerulonephritis and diabetes mellitus. |
Dr Stephen LimDr Stephen Lim is a urological surgeon now in private practice based at the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre Hospital, Singapore. After obtaining his Fellowship degree in surgery, he was subsequently awarded the degree of Master of Surgery in 1980 on his research work. He was the Chief of Urology at the University of Hong Kong before commencing his private practice in Singapore. He has been closely involved in the management of patients with chronic renal failure, from performing complicated vascular access surgery for heamodialysis to renal transplantation. In fact, he was in the pioneer team that first started the renal transplantation programme at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. He currently sits in the medical Advisory Board at both Kidney Dialysis Foundation and AWAK. |
Dr Yap-Whang Hwee Yong, MB, BS, MRCP, Dip ABIM, FACP, FAMS, FRCPDr. Yap-Whang Hwee Yong is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre. She was previously an Associate Internist/Associate Professor of Medicine with the Department of Medicine at the MD Anderson Hospital in Texas, USA. She received her MBBS from the University of Newcastle, England (1971) and is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK)(1974). She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine (1975) and the American Board of Internal Medicine, Oncology Specialty (1977). Dr. Yap-Whang is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (1984), the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (1984) and the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh)(1985). Dr. Yap-Whang was previously a Committee Member of the Singapore Art Museum and the Asian Civilisations Museum Board. She has a special interest in the areas of Cancer Chemotherapy and Clinical Pharmacology, Breast Cancer, the Central Nervous System and Hepatic Metastases. Dr.Yap-Whang has wide experience in cancer patient care, both hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. |
